SYNOPSIS - Brainstorming session ideas imagined by learners and staff present at partnership meetings:

These Think Tank ideas operate as incentives for Partners to produce their PAPER B proposals.

PAPER B - How partners propose to solve the problem:

BELGIUM

It seems that the retired learners, men and women, lack physical exercise because they are traditionally unfamiliar with physical practices or develop an attitude of embarrassment towards bodily activities. Moreover they discard the benefits of existing solutions to their condition.

The proposed fun activities to this target group should therefore address both these issues: they should include a reflexion on the ways to modify cultural beliefs about physical activities and a group discussion about their value.

Since these barriers are very strong we suggest starting from what might get people together and from what they already enjoy doing. Men often spend their leisure time playing card games or backgammon while sitting drinking tea. Women like getting together for preparing and sharing food that involves little physical exercise.

Occasionally for both older men and women there is opportunity for traditional dancing.

ITALY It will be a good idea:
  • to propose videos promoting the use of sport activities for older people.
  • to have a course with specialists in medicine and fitness to make them understand what problems can be caused by immobility.
  • to organise outdoor activities and sport activities that will later become competitions between two teams.
  • to buy bicycles ,with the help of the municipality, to rent to the seniors so they can ride around the park and the city.

PORTUGAL
One common barrier that prevents the elderly from exercising is that they think their health is not good enough to start exercising, and may believe exercising will do more harm than good. Their poor health and the pain related holds them back from exercising. Moreover, seniors have a tendency to think they are too old to start exercising. So, they should begin by completing programmes that contain exercises to strengthen muscles, balance, endurance and mobility.

SPAIN

Initially establish the approach with a fun activity named “We meet to enjoy together”.

  • A call will be done for developing or sharing an activity such as a football match, a popular stage play, a competition of regional dances, a competition of playing cards, etc.
  • For introducing the activity, there would be a speech about the benefits of activity and physical exercise in general.

As a result, a calendar would be designed for the meeting and carrying out of fun activities: treasure hunting, walking and talking, regional dances.
