Miguel Hernández High School
Presentation
The
"Miguel Hernandez" High School of Alicante, the second Institute of
Secondary Education built in the City 30 years ago, initially only for
female students (for a long time known as “Instituto
Femenino”), is located in the nucleus of traditional town,in the
so-called Barrio San Blas, in what can be considered a classical area
of the city.
The District of San Blas, a former rural heading,
began to be consolidated as urban space in the middle of the nineteenth
century, with the building of the Madrid Railway Train Station, in 1874
emerged as a core of compact housing, to provide accommodation for the
workers of the railways ; its growth, with great popular taste, was
slow until the sixties of our century; since then accuses development
and a thorough renovation in its urban morphology and sociological
identity, a result of growing immigration to the City.
Currently,
the intense real estate phenomenon causes a compact and abigarrado,
with blocks of 4 to 6 storeys high, excessive for the road width, which
has radically altered its Urban appearance, originally formed by a low
hamlet of family houses, of peaceful image, the lack of recreational,
sporting, cultural and leisure facilities is made up by the proximity
to the city center and the “Poligono de San Blas” area
relatively well equipped.
The District has a population of 9,324
people, of whom almost 50% are immigrants mainly from Murcia,
Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and the region of La Vega Baja Alicante;
this immigrant population, most living more than twenty years in the
neighbourhood, is fully integrated and embedded in the district social
fabric, at the present time, this mostly working population, has been
joined by a group of professionals and technicians, middle class,
attracted by the proximity to the Centre, what gives San Blas a social
balance, without the problems of social exclusion that affect other
parts of the city. The prospects for future growth are limited
since the process of repairing traditional houses and the occupation of
buildings spaces are well advanced.
In addition to the District
of San Blas, the IES "Miguel Hernandez, along with the other
traditional institute, IES" Jorge Juan, "extends its area of influence
to what can be considered the centre of Alicante area, that as in other
cities, brings together the main functions (commercial, financial,
leisure, hospitality, administrative, etc.). besides being the
favourite residence by professionals and executives of medium - and
high-income.
